Emil seems to be the only one who notices that Mr. Mietling is something special. The man in the unusual clothing is actually a pelican who wants to live like a human because his homeland is falling victim to pollution – and because he loves to sing!

His mother isn't interested in Emil's discovery; she's a single parent and often tired from work. A wonderful friendship develops between him and the bird in human clothing, and together they discover the world – until the adults realize that something is wrong with Mr. Mietling.
