By Benjamin Tienti

In her virtual reality, nine-year-old Lina feels free—free from her own fears and her father’s fears, which are really always about Lina.

In the real world, it’s summer in Berlin. It’s vacation time, but Lina is cooped up inside. Until her dad pulls the plug: The kid has to go outside, to the outdoor pool. The only place with supervision. A French fry stand, a diving platform, the “gum of horror,” a former (almost) Olympic champion and current lifeguard with big ambitions for young diving talents, the sweltering city. It’s all too much for Lina.

And then Khan shows up, also nine years old, but unlike Lina—an only child—he’s number four of seven siblings and completely in his element at the outdoor pool. When the other kids name the timid Lina as the chosen one to win the annual outdoor pool challenge and the honor of the summer, Khan suddenly sees his own honor in jeopardy.

Under the watchful eye of the lifeguard—who’s busy planning her fancy diving competition—the kids’ challenge begins, filled with fierce rivalry and even fiercer cooperation. Lina discovers not only her own ambitious side, but also real-life friends. Only the Oracle (known to his friends simply as Timmy) has long since foreseen the outcome.
