Metropolis Berlin

Few places in Berlin are as well-known as Checkpoint Charlie and the East Side Gallery. They characterise the tourist view of Berlin worldwide, not least thanks to platforms such as TripAdvisor and Instagram.

But who knows the stories behind these landmarks that attract millions of visitors every year?

The answer: Dr Hanno Hochmuth, Sonja Hugi and students on the Master's degree programme in Public History at Freie Universität Berlin.

As part of a seminar, they took an in-depth look at these places and published their findings on the Chronicle of the Wall website. They report on their research into selected artworks, objects and historical traces at the East Side Gallery and Checkpoint Charlie.

The event is part of the ZLB series Metropolis Berlin. In cooperation with Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam.
