The office of Brightline, a telephone crisis service for which Frances, Jon, Angie and Joey work as volunteers, is cramped and shabby. Every Tuesday night they lend their ears to strangers - and do their best to make the helpless to desperate callers feel that everything will be all right.
And that is really necessary. The world is in a state of emergency: the weather is raging, the air is polluted, bridges are collapsing, the electricity is failing, an economic crisis is looming. Everything seems to be disintegrating. But week after week, the four listen to worries big and small, respond to human catastrophes and skilfully fend off inappropriate calls. And, as if along the way, juggle their own lives in crisis.
Sam Steiner draws a colourful community of fate that does everything in its power to preserve hope for itself and others in a hopeless time. "You Stupid Darkness" is a lively plea for the power of solidarity and the vitality of optimism.
