As the new chief conductor of the DSO, Kazuki Yamada opens his inaugural concert with a sweeping exploration of the relationship between the human individual, spirituality, and nature.

The concert begins with philosophy set to music: “The Unanswered Question” by Charles Ives—a tribute to the ceaseless act of questioning, even as answers often fail to provide the solutions the questioners hope for. This is followed by Edvard Grieg’s piano concerto, in which the environment of his childhood resonates, before the German premiere of Anna Clyne’s “Woman of the Mountain” focuses on Irish nature, and finally Claude Debussy’s “La mer,” which takes on the themes of both the ocean and Japanese art.
