Gob Squad
Where do we start? In the truest sense of the word: Where do we—and what we consider to be “us,” what you consider to be “you”—where does that begin? “Doppelgänger/Doppelganger” is a performative journey into the labyrinthine depths and abysses of a mirror world, where what we believe ourselves to be—unique and unmistakable—begins to multiply.
In this world of duplications and projections, of forgetting and remembering, and of eternal self-conjuring, the performers of Gob Squad are stuck in a seemingly endless party. But no one seems to know anymore what there actually is to celebrate. Wasn’t it someone’s birthday? There’s cake and balloons, and everything is captured on camera: Someone took a photo! And in it, we do look like we’re having a good time… Trapped in this party loop, Gob Squad finally searches the audience for reasons to celebrate. And for possible doppelgängers—to expand themselves, to confront themselves, to completely shut themselves down, or to dissolve into the many.
The dance with the self begins. But who is leading whom here, and through whose story? What speaks through whom, and how many? And who decides what happens next, anyway?
The birthday party descends into a surreal vision full of unexpected twists, in which different identities and voices fight relentlessly to be heard, and we encounter—as a utopian déjà vu—the shared responsibility for something that is more than ourselves.
