Aeschylus’ *Oresteia* is the only ancient tragic trilogy to have survived in its entirety; it tells of the curse of the House of Atreus: of Agamemnon’s return from Troy, his murder at the hands of Clytemnestra, and the revenge taken by his son, Orestes.
Its significance lies in the fact that it dramatises a historical and political transition: from blood feuds, family curses and divine retribution towards the courts, public scrutiny and democratic justice. To this day, it is therefore regarded as the founding text of European theatre — and as a play about the fragile invention of law.
Hungarian director Ildikó Gáspár returns to the DT together with her team, following their production of *The Marquise by O.*
