PREMIERE

Radically open, “The Youngest Daughter” brings up the diversity of an identity – the powerful narrative of self-empowerment.

  • by Fatima Daas
  • Translated from French by Sina de Malafosse

Attracting attention, leading a double life, not living up to expectations – Fatima feels at odds with herself and the world early on. Growing up in a Paris suburb as the youngest daughter of an Algerian family, she constantly feels torn between family and self-discovery, faith and sexuality, tradition and urban life.

She has to travel three hours by bus every day to go to secondary school. What to do with the uncertainty, the anger and the strength that she feels within herself? Fatima finds an outlet in writing. “My name is Fatima” is the compelling beginning of every page in her notebook. In a mixture of surah and spoken word, she confronts the situations that have made her who she is today: a commuter between worlds that shouldn't actually be separated from each other. Her words gradually reveal a commitment to herself and her story.

The award-winning debut novel “The Youngest Daughter” by Fatima Daas was celebrated as a literary event and will be adapted for the stage and premiered by Leyla-Claire Rabih.
