Scenic reading on the 100th anniversary of Eleonora Duse's death

“With Eleonora Duse, a true princess in the realm of art has passed away. She was undoubtedly the greatest phenomenon of her kind, the greatest tragedy in the world. One will always think of her when one wants to remember the most sublime that has been achieved in art and in humanity.”

This is what Gerhart Hauptmann wrote on the occasion of the death of this actress, whose anniversary will be 100 years old on April 21, 2024.

And on this very day they tell about the eventful life of this woman, whose name is still synonymous with something extraordinary in theater circles. She is as well known to Italians as her contemporary Enrico Caruso - both are national shrines to them.

What was the basis for Eleonora Duse's omnipresent fame at the time?

Until her appearance, the art of acting was evident in large, theatrical posing and exaggerated declaiming - as was the case with Sarah Bernhardt, her initial competitor for the title of the first female world star.

“The Duse”, on the other hand, showed “true people” on stage without any airs and graces for the first time in theater history – which was a sensation that is hardly imaginable today.

The famous critic Alfred Kerr wrote after a guest performance in Berlin: “At the Duse you can hear eternity rushing while Bernhardt makes the backdrops shake.”

And Charlie Chaplin, after seeing 'La grande Duse' at one of her American tours: "...I realized that there was the greatest actress I had ever seen."
