Special opening

The Meierei is located on the idyllic northern tip of Peacock Island. The building, which resembles a dilapidated monastery complex from the outside, was constructed in 1794–95 at the behest of King Frederick William II.

Inside, it surprises visitors with the impressive Gothic Hall on the upper floor, which was decorated by the Italian artist Bartolomeo Verona with a three-dimensional perspective painting. Similar to other Romantic architectural works from the late 18th century, such as Queen Marie Antoinette’s Hameau de la Reine in the park of the Palace of Versailles, the Meierei on Peacock Island served as a retreat that combined elements of simple living with the luxury of the royal court.
