Castle Tours for National Heritage Day
Berlin’s oldest palace complex, comprising the palace, courtyard, and outbuildings, is a unique example of Renaissance architecture in Berlin. Its special location on the shores of Lake Grunewald, in the heart of the forest, also provides a charming setting for Berlin’s largest collection of works by Cranach.

Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg had the palace built beginning in 1542 for his hunting trips. As a key figure in the development of the Renaissance in Berlin, Joachim II commissioned numerous works from Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger, including the Passion panels for Berlin’s Stiftskirche.
The outstanding Cranach collection at the hunting lodge is complemented by the SPSG’s collection of Old German and Old Dutch paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries.
