Under the direction of the multi-award-winning and internationally renowned composer Hazel Leach, fifteen musicians came together in Berlin in 2010 to form the Composers' Orchestra Berlin (COB): a large ensemble of top-class, creative and enthusiastic Berlin musicians who work together to develop and perform their compositions.
With four strings, three woodwinds, three brass instruments and a rhythm section, the line-up is as flexible and surprising as the musical influences and backgrounds, which range from jazz and new music to neoclassical, pop, folk and world music.
Traditional jazz improvisation, sophisticated orchestration, experimental forms or quirky dance music, the COB shies away from nothing, because the composer is always there and can bring his vision to life: Hazel calls it ‘free range music’ with subtle British humour, because ‘free range’ means the space that all happy animals on the farm should be allowed.
In the twelve years since its inception, the COB has made a name for itself with monthly performances on the Berlin scene and has released four CDs and an audio book production by rbb.
