Folke Köbberling with Stella Flatten, Sina Heffner, Max Jeromin, Gergely László, Natalija Miodragović, Bernd Schulz and Michael Zwingmann.

Under the direction of Prof. Folke Köbberling, the Institute for Architecture-Related Art (IAK) at the Technical University of Braunschweig is presenting itself in Berlin. The institute, affectionately known as ‘Busch’, pursues conceptual and interdisciplinary approaches.

In recent years, three key areas of focus have emerged: renewable raw materials, co-habitats and legacies.

Changing exhibitions in the Pforte provide an insight into these thematic areas and initiate a dialogue on contemporary artistic challenges in architecture, art and teaching.

Renewable Raw Materials (10 October – 28 November 2026)

The ‘Renewable Raw Materials’ theme explores regenerative materials and considers them as more than just sustainable alternatives. Through works made from raw wool, mycelium and clay, the exhibition presents the structural, spatial and aesthetic possibilities of bio-based materials.

Co-Habitats (5 December 2026 – 30 January 2027)

The IAK is housed in a concrete building in the heart of the Querum Forest. Student projects explore how spaces can be created within the institute that are not conceived solely from a human perspective and which thus facilitate scenarios of coexistence. Co-Habitate is dedicated to the coexistence of different life forms and views architecture as a network of relationships between humans, animals, plants and microorganisms.

Legacies (10 February – 31 March 2027)

‘Legacies’ looks back at the history of the institute itself and examines this space from a contemporary perspective. The institute building, which served as the Institute for Architectural Air-Raid Protection under National Socialism from 1942 to 1945, is both the starting point and a protagonist in its own right for interdisciplinary research that addresses, amongst other things, bunker construction and the use of forced labour.

In addition to the exhibitions in the Pforte, an installation made of raw wool by Folke Köbberling will be on display in the public space.

The programme of events fosters exchange between Busch and Berlin and invites experts to contribute to the discussions in the respective subject areas. IAK students will present their seminar papers as part of the exhibition series and a concluding presentation.
