Film highlights in March
The intimate cinema in the former cake production facility of the Brotfabrik has long been more than just an insider tip for film enthusiasts. In a special atmosphere, far away from the mainstream, the Brotfabrik cinema in Pankow consistently focuses on an independent, carefully curated film programme.
The focus here is on artistic signature, social relevance and cinematic discoveries.
In March, visitors can once again look forward to special film highlights that inspire reflection, open up new perspectives and bring cinema to life as a cultural meeting place.

Without Bosses – Democracy at Work
Germany 2025, 52 min, documentary, director: Mario Burbach, German version
The film follows people who are attempting to prove something seemingly impossible: yes, a company can function without bosses. In collective enterprises, cooperatives and self-managed companies, people fight every day for a better ‘right in the wrong’. We meet ordinary people who take control of their working lives. Stories that encourage us to leave old ways behind and break new ground together – not as theory, but as lived practice.
In the presence of director Mario Burbach and other guests.

Preview: Nouvelle Vague
F 2025, 105 min, feature film, director: Richard Linklater, original version with subtitles
Paris, late 1950s: 28-year-old Jean-Luc Godard is the only one in his circle of friends who has not yet made his own film. With a crazy team, an American film star and little money, he finally succeeds in creating a masterpiece under adventurous circumstances with ‘Breathless’, which will go down in film history and change cinema forever. With ‘Nouvelle Vague’, cult director Richard Linklater brings an entire generation of young rebels back to life: enviably cool, outrageously courageous and driven by an unconditional desire to do everything in a new and different way. A film that sparkles with wit, dynamism and humour and makes you fall head over heels in love with cinema all over again. Nouvelle Vague celebrated its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Sunday | 08.03. | 7:00 p.m. | BrotfabrikKINO
Westwood: Punk. Icon. Activist.
UK 2017, 80 min, Director: Lorna Tucker, Original version with subtitles
The film tells the story of a fighter who, despite all her defeats, remained true to her ideas and ideals and made history as the enfant terrible of the British fashion world and grande dame of punk. Self-proclaimed daydreamer Vivienne Westwood came from a modest family background and arrived in London at the age of 17, right in the middle of the Swinging Sixties. Her life changed abruptly when she met Sex Pistols manager and impresario Malcolm McLaren and their joint shop on Kings Road revolutionised pop culture. Westwood's career is marked by successes, conflicts and uncertainties.

Der laute Frühling (The Loud Spring) + book presentation: How we are fighting for a future on this planet
Germany 2022, 62 min, documentary, director: Johanna Schellhagen, DF
‘The Loud Spring’ was released in cinemas in August 2022. The filmmaker then spent two years travelling around with the film. It was shown and discussed extensively, particularly within the climate movement. She recorded her impressions of the discussions the film generated and wrote a book: ‘How We Fight for a Future on This Planet – A Handbook for the Fearless’. In it, she addresses the most common reactions and develops a consistent strategic proposal for how we can build enough unity and material power to replace capitalism with a sustainable, sensible mode of production and curb the climate catastrophe.
In the presence of author and director Johanna Schellhagen

The True Costs – The Price of Fashion
USA 2015, 92 min, documentary, director: Andrew Morgan, original version with subtitles
A jumper or a pair of trousers for less than £10. How can it be that clothes cost so little here? The director sets out to find the answer and impressively traces the journey that clothes take before they reach our shops. There is hardly any other market where appearance and reality are so far apart as in the clothing industry. On the one hand, there are fashion shows with star models and red carpets; on the other hand, the clothes are mostly produced under slave-like conditions in so-called third world countries. The film reveals the shocking truth: others have to pay the price for our clothes.
As part of the exhibition ‘Iris Lorenz Berlin - Gothic, Glitter And Eternity’.

Tailor made Dreams – Tailor-made dreams
Germany 2006, 90 min, documentary, director: Marco Wilms, original version with subtitles
All his life, tailor Issar has been supplying Europeans with suits in Bangkok. Now retired, he finally flies to Europe for a return visit with German film director Marco Wilms. Everywhere he goes, he meets people whom he persuades to order new suits from him. The womaniser and Bollywood fan – who always wanted to be a Bollywood star himself – brings with him thousands of business cards from old customers and a romanticised image of Europe, fuelled by episodes from his favourite film ‘Sangam’, which was shot in Switzerland. In the course of his journey, the Indian tailor increasingly dreams of dance and song scenes in the sober reality.
As part of the exhibition ‘Iris Lorenz Berlin - Gothic, Glitter And Eternity’. In the presence of director Marco Wilms.

A Dream in Strawberry Foil – Comrade Couture
Germany 2009, 84 min, documentary, director: Marco Wilms, original version with English subtitles
‘A Dream in Strawberry Foil – Comrade Couture’ is a journey into the wild parallel world of East Berlin's fashion and survival artists. Here, you could break the mould, be individual and provocative. The most important distinguishing feature of the scene was personal style, because you couldn't buy that in the GDR. You had to craft your own individual image in this parallel world. The film tells of the longings, passions and dreams that were tested, lived and staged in the shadow of the Wall. Director Marco Wilms, himself a model at the GDR's Fashion Institute at the time, sets out to recreate this unique attitude to life of economic light-heartedness and the desire to be radically different in the here and now. He seeks out the heroes of his East Berlin youth: designer Sabine von Oettingen, photographer Robert Paris and stylist and hairdresser Frank Schäfer, and explores their dazzling parallel world life with them. After two decades, the members and friends of the legendary East Berlin avant-garde fashion theatres ‘ChicCharmant und Dauerhaft’ and “Allerleirauh” meet again at a ‘subversive’ Eastern Bloc party initiated by director Marco Wilms. ‘Ein Traum in Erdbeerfolie – Comrade Couture’ is a humorous documentary film about creativity as the elixir of life – and the never-ending longing for individual freedom.
As part of the exhibition ‘Iris Lorenz Berlin – Gothic, Glitter And Eternity’. Followed by a discussion between curator Petra Schröck and director Marco Wilms.
