Music for String Quartet by Ligeti, Ustvolskaya, and Schubert

Light and shadow, brightness and darkness characterize the current program of the New York string quartet Brooklyn Rider. As always, this ensemble—known for its willingness to experiment—presents not only well-known classics but also extraordinary works.

Works by Galina Ustvolskaya and György Ligeti provide a striking contrast to Hildegard von Bingen’s 1,000-year-old antiphon “Caritas abundat in omnia” (All is filled with love), which serves here as the prelude to Schubert’s great G major quartet—a masterpiece of musical chiaroscuro.
