With expressive full playback, Bridge Markland conjures up a whirlwind pop-music courtroom show. The court case centres on a broken jug. Behind this lies another offence: an influential man has harassed a young woman.

Will young Eve accuse him? After all, the perpetrator is threatening to kill her fiancé Ruprecht in distant wars. Only she can save Ruprecht from this military deployment. And Hans Albers sings vividly to this effect: ‘Near Rocktown he’s long since lain in his grave / and flowers are growing out of his bones.’ As the show progresses, the web of lies becomes increasingly transparent.

A play for fans of classic theatrical material; for people curious about Kleist; for music fans who want to hear how pop music from the last 80 years fits with Kleist.

In rapid succession, the master of transformation plays the village judge Adam, the plaintiff Rull, her daughter and her fiancé, and the witness, using both hand-operated and free-standing puppets. The original texts, narrated by various actors and actresses, are paired with fitting songs from across pop culture.
