Dream sequences, moonlight, melancholy – with this atmospherically rich programme, Composer in Residence Brett Dean and the Karajan Academy take the audience on a journey into nocturnal worlds of sound and shadow.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s late-Romantic string sextet evokes the dazzling magic of the Belle Époque, whilst György Kurtág’s surreal-seeming piece … quasi una fantasia … seems like a distant echo of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Brett Dean contrasts this with two of his own works: his evocative *Dream Sequence* and the sombre *Epitaph*, a moving tribute to five artist friends who have passed away.
