Mascha Kaléko – a literary portrait

The tender, ironic tone of her verses, imbued with melancholy and wit, made Mascha Kaléko a celebrated poet of her time as early as the 1930s. Her poems reflect the attitude towards life of an entire generation – light-hearted yet profound, full of charm and keen observation.

Even after emigrating to the USA, where she sang against the ‘cult of the dollar’, and later to Israel, Berlin remained the place she longed for. ‘Her Berlin’, as she called it, was the place where she once sang ‘in the Prussian poets' forest, department for city larks’ and celebrated great successes. To this day, her bittersweet poems exert an incomparable magic and touch readers across generations.

The reading is accompanied by piano works from that period – by Max Reger, Camille Saint-Saëns, Antonín Dvořák, Scott Joplin, Paul Desmond and others – thus creating an atmospheric connection between literature and music.

The reader is Rosa Tennenbaum, who brings Kaleko's poetry to life with her voice. Jonathan Tennenbaum provides the musical accompaniment on the piano, lending the evening a special tone colour.

A literary and musical portrait that brings the magic of Mascha Kaleko back to life – full of poetry, music and memories of an extraordinary poet.
