When music doesn’t just sound good, but transforms—that’s when it has truly made its mark. With his debut album “Big Mama Society,” Italian composer, guitarist, and producer Enrico Olivanti presents one of the most ambitious and multifaceted projects on the current European jazz scene: a ten-piece multicultural ensemble that doesn’t merely bridge the boundaries between genres, cultures, and soundscapes—it dissolves them.

Transformation is the central theme of this album—not as an abstract concept, but as a lived artistic experience. Inspired by C.G. Jung’s theory of
individuation and the Taoist principle of wu wei, the music of “Big Mama Society” spans a broad stylistic spectrum: from electronic soundscapes to Mediterranean melodies, tango, and Brazilian rhythms, all the way to jazz improvisation and symphonic elements. Each stylistic shift is not a break but a transformation—a passage from one world to another.
“Big Mama” stands as a universal archetype: the transformative, cyclical principle of life itself. Growth, migration, crisis, rebirth—the album accompanies this journey with an emotional directness that invites the audience to embrace their own transformation. Enrico Olivanti, born in Italy and a long-time resident of Berlin, composes electronic music and writes for orchestras and chamber ensembles—bringing this multifaceted approach to every composition. The sounds on this album do not arise from a theoretical construct, but from the lived experience of a person who navigates between cultures, languages, and musical worlds and has found his artistic expression in this liminal space. As a lecturer at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden and a recipient of a DAAD scholarship, he combines academic depth with an unmistakably personal voice. The album’s themes—migration, individuation, spiritual realization, and acceptance of change—are not abstract ideas, but chapters of his own story.
“Big Mama Society” is also the first manifestation of a larger artistic research project: Pacha Sonora—a transcultural project that combines Andean cosmology, sound, and participatory musical practice, and conceives of music as a space for ontological transformation. What you hear on this album is the first
step on a long, global journey.
