What does ‘home’ mean to us? A conversation about belonging, memories and the many different ways of looking at what we call ‘home’.
What does ‘home’ mean to you? What makes a country a home – for people who have put down roots here, and for those who are just arriving? And how can you discuss such a central concept of living together, one on which so many people have so many different perspectives, memories and feelings?

Das Große Gespräch – Reden über Heimat mit Kai Schächtele
‘The Big Conversation – Talking about Home’ is part of a nationwide series of discussions organised by Mehr Demokratie and the Open Society Initiative.
The discussions are based on the tried-and-tested ‘Speaking & Listening’ dialogue format, which was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is based on a simple yet effective idea: beyond differences of opinion, meaningful connections can be forged when people are able to exchange views within a structured framework for discussion. From early October to early November, around 100 of these discussions will take place in adult education centres, schools, clubs, businesses, church parishes, neighbourhood centres and local community facilities.
Each event stands on its own. At the same time, the many local conversations will provide a nationwide snapshot of public sentiment. Provided the participants agree, the conversations will be documented anonymously and compiled into a collective ‘conversation map’. The results of the nationwide dialogue will be presented on 18 November at a public online event.
The event will be moderated by the journalist Kai Schächtele. He is part of the team organising the nationwide series of discussions.
