Two Sides of Romanticism: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s vividly shimmering incidental music for Shakespeare’s *A Midsummer Night’s Dream* captivates with its elfin lightness—and, in the famous Wedding March, with its radiant euphoria.
Robert Schumann, on the other hand, strikes a contemplative, sensitive tone in his Cello Concerto. The soloist is Yo-Yo Ma: arguably the most renowned cellist of our time, returning to the Berlin Philharmonic after a long hiatus.
Conductor Dima Slobodeniouk opens the evening with the nostalgic work *Recollections: Locket*, in which Composer-in-Residence Brett Dean quotes a theme from Clara Schumann.
