It is about his love for his wife Clara as well as his musical role model, Johann Sebastian Bach. Inspired by Bach’s music, Schumann combined dense contrapuntal work with enchantingly intimate melodies.
Brett Dean, this season’s Composer in Residence, describes his violin concerto *The Lost Art of Letter Writing* as “quite a tricky piece”—perfect for Isabelle Faust’s flawless virtuosity. With a sensual and fragile sound, Dean evokes a nostalgic world in which people still wrote letters to one another.
