Is all of this just a strange nightmare? Are we on a movie set, and if so, what bizarre script is being filmed here? Are we watching characters in a therapeutic role-playing exercise? Or could all of this, in the end, actually be reality?
Something is rotten in this “bad kingdom” of the present. Its inhabitants are insecure people in a big city. They wonder how to deal with the feeling of gradually losing their footing amid crises that are piling up on top of one another at an ever-increasing pace. Are there connections worth fighting for? They search for ways out of their loneliness or recoil from too much intimacy. They wonder how they can find security and a sense of hope for the future in the confusing relationships and friendships they have or would like to have.
Through short, fragmentary scenes—variations and possibilities of reality—Falk Richter’s new play captures a snapshot of the present.
Falk Richter was born in Hamburg in 1969 and worked for many years as a playwright and director at the Schaubühne. Since then, he has directed at numerous German-speaking and international theaters and was named Director of the Year (Theater heute) in 2018 for his production of “Am Königsweg.” “The Silence” was his first production during the 2023–24 season at the Schaubühne and was invited to the 2024 Theatertreffen.
