Natalja Sharandak grew up in Kiev. She studied art history and worked as a research assistant at the St. Petersburg Hermitage.

During this time she published numerous publications and documentaries on feminist Russian art. Among others, the 1993 documentary "Arithmetic of Equality", which shows the difficulties of female artists in the feminist context in Russia.
