Hacks on Imperialism | "A Dead End of Social Evolution"
Imperialism, Hacks believed, had been historically dismissed and thus unproductive both in terms of content and poetry. He came to the GDR in 1955 to devote himself to topics he considered more promising for the future and to address the contradictions in the development of socialism.
But more than other poets, Hacks has always devoted himself to the century-long contradiction between imperialism and socialism, both in his poetry and in his essays and notes.
This clearly demonstrates Hacks's understanding of imperialism as a political-economic stage of capitalism's development and his thorough understanding of the ideas of classical authors.
The conference aims, on the one hand, to clarify Hacks's engagement with capitalism and imperialism and, on the other, to examine the relevance of his reflections to current conflicts.
