Toward Freedom, Toward the Sun

Hardly any composer defended and musically illuminated the idea of freedom as passionately as Ludwig van Beethoven. For him, freedom was not a political slogan, but an inner calling – a condition of being human.

His overtures are not mere introductions, but condensations of human destinies, struggles, and hopes. They are dramas of confrontation with existential human themes.

The Renaissance palace in the Grunewald becomes a stage for Beethoven’s visions of freedom—timeless and yet profoundly contemporary. Under the open sky in the Grunewald, Beethoven’s entire path unfolds, from heroic departure to spiritual freedom. Each of his overtures is a dramatic confession of courage, self-determination, and humanity.

From the passionate Coriolan Overture to the radiant Leonore, and on to the sunlit clarity of the late works, this evening traces Beethoven’s inner struggles.

Beethoven’s overtures are filled with images of nature and gestures of freedom, always charting a path that leads from lived darkness into luminous clarity and vastness.

The Orpheus Ensemble Berlin, with around 50 musicians from Berlin’s cultural landscape under the direction of Stefan Meinecke, presents an open-air evening with works that can never be heard in this way in a concert hall.

This year, the Classical Open-Air concerts take place for the 13th time under the open sky before a magnificent, illuminated palace backdrop, in close connection with nature.
