Based on the observation that the “East” increasingly serves as a cultural, aesthetic, and political canvas for projection, the multi-part exhibition, discourse, and publication project *Projections on the East* explores the ideological attributions associated with the terms “East” and “West.”

International artists, scholars, and authors examine historical and contemporary lines of conflict—ranging from the GDR’s politics of memory to antisemitism and post-socialist transformations, all the way to current geopolitical tensions. The project centers on the question of how the dichotomy between “East” and “West” shapes the present.
Accompanying two exhibitions at the n.b.k. and the Schinkel Pavillon, a publication and a project website bring together the artistic positions, research perspectives, and contributions to the discourse. An extensive program of discussions further explores the thematic questions.
