Samurai Museum Berlin

Okegawa Nimai Dō - This complete samurai armor dates to the Azuchi–Momoyama period (1573–1603), an era of profound political change and military innovation in Japan.

Comprising a helmet, face mask, shoulder guards, arm guards, thigh protection, and shin guards, it exemplifies the refined balance of functionality and craftsmanship that defined the armor of the period.

Its most striking feature is the red lacquer applied to several elements of the armor—a hallmark of the Ii clan, whose warriors became renowned for their distinctive red armor. The crest on the helmet further identifies its connection to this influential samurai family, rulers of the Hikone domain. The removable kusazuri (tassets) and the gold circular motif on the haidate (thigh guard), often interpreted as a symbol of the sun, combine practical design with symbolic meaning.

The armor continues to resonate in contemporary culture. It appears as a documented historical artifact in the Codex of Assassin's Creed Shadows (2025), a game set during the turbulent Sengoku period of the 1580s. By bridging historical research with modern storytelling, the armor remains a powerful testament to Japan's martial heritage and its enduring influence on global popular culture.
