The metropolis of Istanbul and its inhabitants are the focus of the exhibition. Fascinating drawings and prints vividly illustrate the diverse connections between Central Europe and the city on the Bosporus.
The exhibition spans from the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire in 1453 to the establishment of diplomatic relations with Prussia by the first Turkish embassy in Berlin in 1763.
Works by world-renowned artists such as Pollaiuolo, Dürer, Coecke van Aelst, Rembrandt, Liotard, and Chodowiecki paint a multifaceted picture:
Some reflect the significance of art and music, testifying to curiosity and enthusiasm. Others serve propagandistic interests and spread prejudices. Contemporary artistic perspectives complement the selection of works with reflections on questions of identity and stereotypes.
- A special exhibition of the Kupferstichkabinett – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Museum of Prints and Drawings – National Museums in Berlin).
