With her performance “We Make Years Out of Hours,” Lina Lapelytė transforms the historic hall of the Hamburger Bahnhof into a place of collective action and singing as part of the second CHANEL Commission. Lapelytė is known for her meditative works, in which she combines sound, rituals, and labor. “We Make Years Out of Hours” is intended as a living monument to time, care, and coexistence.

Performance and exhibition

The exhibition transcends the boundaries between sculpture and performance, as well as between the individual and the collective.
Through the active involvement of the audience, the participatory format emphasizes the concept of the open museum, which is also the motto of the Hamburger Bahnhof's 30th anniversary.

  • The exhibition opens during Gallery Weekend Berlin.

About the artist

Lina Lapelytė (born 1984, Kaunas, Lithuania) is an artist and composer whose practice is firmly rooted in performance. She lives and works between Vilnius and London, developing collective singing actions together with professional and non-professional performers. In these, she questions systems of silencing and invites vulnerability.
Her works have been shown at the Festival d'Automne/Bourse de Commerce in Paris, BAM, MOCA, and the Venice Biennale, among others. She gained international recognition in particular with the opera Sun & Sea, which she developed together with Vaiva Grainytė and Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė and which was awarded the Golden Lion at the Biennale di Venezia in 2019.

The exhibition is part of the anniversary program “30 Years of Hamburger Bahnhof.” To mark its 30th anniversary, the museum is presenting an extensive program in 2026 that spans the history of the location to the future.
Eight special exhibitions, a new collection presentation, performances, and concerts carry the museum far into the urban space. The highlight of the anniversary year will be the weekend of November 13 to 15, when an international conference on the future of contemporary collection museums will take place and the museum will be open continuously for 30 hours.

The CHANEL Commission at Hamburger Bahnhof is an annual initiative that enables artists to realize large-scale projects. With their scope and vision, these projects create artistic reinterpretations of the museum's iconic 2,500-square-meter historic hall, which is also used as a place of exchange with the public. Following Klára Hosnedlová in 2025, Lina Lapelytė will realize the second edition of the CHANEL Commission in 2026.

  • The CHANEL Commission at Hamburger Bahnhof is made possible by the CHANEL Culture Fund.
  • A special exhibition of the National Gallery of the Berlin State Museums
