This year, the two Protestant parishes of Mariendorf and Teltow are jointly presenting J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.

Under the direction of Lenka Fehl-Gajdošová and Heiko Henrich, the two choirs will perform this great work by the Thomaskantor of Leipzig together. The first three parts in particular are among the most famous works of church music of all time.

To perform this music as authentically as possible and to remain as faithful as possible to Bach’s original intention, an orchestra specialising in historical performance practice – Capella Vitalis Berlin – will accompany the choir and the soloists. It is precisely the warm and mellow sound of the period instruments that creates a very special – and for some, unprecedented – auditory experience, lending the work a whole new dimension.

In particular, the virtuoso trumpet part – which Bach composed specifically for specialists who happened to be visiting Leipzig at the time – takes on a completely different tonal spectrum thanks to the wind instruments, which differ considerably in technical terms from modern ones; a sound that is almost impossible to capture on recordings and only truly comes into its own within the church interior.
