Following on from ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, this summer’s informal series of workshops at the Sophiensäle is now focusing on ceramics.

Participants will shape their own vases from clay and then decorate them with engobes – coloured clay slurries. In the process, they will learn basic shaping techniques and experience how a single piece of clay gradually takes shape to become their own vessel. The workshop is led by artists from the Kreuzberg-based ceramics collective Bündnis Feuer und Flamme.

Drawing on the history of the Sophiensæle as the former clubhouse of the Berlin Craftsmen’s Association, the series combines craftsmanship with artistic practice.

The vase draws on the flowers of the anniversary year and the ikebana workshop. However, it also speaks of the breaks and continuities that accompany an engagement with the building’s history. Working together is about mindfulness, materials and the opportunity to explore different rhythms and forms of collaboration.

Materials will be provided. After the workshop, the vases will be fired and glazed in the collective’s workshop and can then be collected from the Sophiensæle.
