The theatre show starring Mely Kiyak

‘Poetry! Poetry!’ is the name of the new series by the writer Mely Kiyak at the Deutsches Theater. Her salons are legendary and have previously been staged at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg and the Gorki Theater in Berlin.

Her concept is easily explained: Believe in art! For the Deutsches Theater, Mely Kiyak wants to explore the core idea that poetry stirs something within the human condition and provides answers to the questions: Why do we live? How do we persevere?

Exile, loss, imprisonment or an all-encompassing loneliness – whether in war or on a sickbed – are states that we are all familiar with.

Mely Kiyak: “There is a kind of poetry which, in sonatas or verses, tells of the worst in a way that is breathtakingly beautiful, and which can make sense of the world and shed light on it. I want to experience that together with the audience. And to remind us of beauty.”

To kick off the series on 3 December, the world-class pianist Anna Vinnitskaya will perform works by Béla Bartók, Johannes Brahms and Maurice Ravel on the piano.

Anna and Mely will discuss Rachmaninoff’s loneliness, whilst the exceptional Berlin poet Björn Kuhligk will draw on *Die Sprache von Gibraltar* in his poems to commemorate those who have lost their lives in the Mediterranean. All three are very much looking forward to the evening!
