Writers · Reading · Performance · Music

“Pick up your pen, mate!” – under this slogan, workers in the GDR were encouraged to become writers themselves. Within workplace circles, poems, stories and prose pieces emerged about work and everyday life, hopes, longings and political convictions.

Anna Martha and Thomas Hartung set out to explore the Archive for Working-Class Writers, where they discovered voices from a vanished society: sometimes fully in line with the official ideology, sometimes full of nuances, contradictions and cautious criticism. In their reading and performance *DDRdirekt*, they bring these surprising texts to life once more – sounds of factory halls and housing shortages, of the collective, of football and big dreams. Accompanied by music from Christian Beckers, the performance offers an unusual perspective on literature, everyday life and the social worlds of the GDR.

Admission is free.

The project is funded by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises from funds earmarked for special tourism projects.
