A solo piece by and starring Jule Torhorst

“The idea of masculinity as the measure of all that is human simply creeps in gradually.” (Barbara Sichtermann, journalist and writer)

The actress Jule Torhorst raises the question of power – drawing on the life story of her great-great-aunt, Dr Marie Torhorst. In 1947, she became Germany’s (GDR) first female minister. Yet she remains virtually unmentioned in official historical accounts. In a dialogue with archetypal female figures, she asks: Did the East produce more emancipated women under the Five-Year Plan, and will the West German housewife rise to the challenge? Can they break free from the patriarchal mould? An exploration of the communist utopia right up to the controversial present day.

The project is funded by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises from funds earmarked for special tourism projects.

This event is part of the Berlin Freedom Week programme.
