Reading with Julia Malik and a Discussion on Violence, Power, and Responsibility

Where does domestic violence begin? Why does it often remain hidden for so long, even from those close to the victims? And what responsibility do people have when they recognise or suspect violence?

To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Dahlem Research Campus is hosting a reading with the actress and author Julia Malik, followed by a panel discussion.

In her novel *Ich will dich lebend* (*I Want You Alive*), Julia Malik tells the story of a woman who finds herself increasingly caught up in a relationship characterised by manipulation and violence. In doing so, she also turns her attention to her personal circle, particularly a friend who tries to help. The novel explores love, dependency and control, and how difficult it can be to recognise violence and break free from it.

In the discussion that follows, Julia Malik will talk with Lara Rossi and Nina Marlene Kraus about why violence against women is often overlooked and how those affected can be supported.

As the Equality Officer at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Lara Rossi brings a perspective on institutional responsibility and possible courses of action.

Nina Marlene Kraus, curator of the exhibition ‘On the Situation of Women in Family and Society’, broadens the discussion to include societal role models and the question of how exhibitions can highlight the realities of women’s lives. Together, they will discuss what it takes to recognise, address and counter violence. The audience is invited to ask questions and join in the discussion.

This evening event complements the theme and action day ‘Power: recognise, name, change’ by offering a literary perspective on violence in personal relationships.
