BIPoC Queer Migrants Collective Autobiographies

What makes a home? How do the people with whom a person speaks shape the stories they tell about themselves? And which objects, places, memories and relationships become tools through which one can understand one’s own identity?

‘Where Stories Become Homes’ presents texts created as part of a three-part workshop on collective autobiographical writing by BIPoC and queer diasporic individuals in Berlin. Through autobiographical writing, discussions and collective reflection, the participants explored questions of home, migration, queerness, identity, belonging and memory.

The individual workshop sessions were based on three different themes: ‘A House Is Not a Home’, ‘A Conversation with 000’ and ‘Props of Identity’. Drawing on these themes, personal stories emerged in various forms, voices and languages, each shaped by the experiences and choices of the individual authors.

At the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the participants will present selected pieces from this process in a format of their choice. The readings will take various forms, reflecting the participants’ different visions of how their texts should be presented, heard and experienced.

In addition to the readings, the publication resulting from the workshop will be presented, bringing together the individual contributions in printed form.

Rather than offering a uniform narrative of the experiences of queer migrants from BIPoC communities, the event provides a space for diverse, sometimes overlapping, sometimes contradictory ways of remembering, belonging and telling personal stories.
