With this concert, Hot Tropical Nights pays tribute to the Brazilian composer, multi-instrumentalist and improvisational artist Hermeto Pascoal (1936–2025), who passed away in 2025, one of the most visionary musicians in the history of international jazz.

Drawing on the traditions of samba jazz and Brazilian instrumental music, Hermeto Pascoal developed a distinctive musical language in which jazz, folklore, free improvisation and unusual sounds merged to create something entirely new. With the Sambrasa Trio (1964), the Quarteto Novo and later ensembles, he created music that has influenced generations of musicians worldwide. Miles Davis described him as ‘the most impressive musician in the world’.

For this tribute concert, some of the most prominent musicians from Berlin’s jazz scene have come together to reinterpret Hermeto Pascoal’s extraordinary body of work. Originally, the Brazilian flautist Mariana Zwarg was also due to take part, but unfortunately had to withdraw due to a scheduling conflict. Mariana Zwarg has had close ties to Hermeto Pascoal and his music since her childhood.

An evening full of surprising timbres and a tribute to an artist who has continually redefined the boundaries of jazz.
