Judith Steenbrink, violin | Tinke Steenbrink, Harpsichord
“The freest and most unrestrained form of composition – bound by nothing,” is how Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680) described this phenomenon.
This unfettered form of musical expression promises a fascinating experience of Baroque virtuosity and expressiveness. The focus is on
Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, arguably the most dazzling figure amongst the great violin virtuosos of the 17th century – a Paganini of his time. Biber’s works
are brimming with virtuosic effects, innovative playing techniques, eccentricity and boundless inventiveness: the ‘Stylus Fantasticus’ at the height of its development. Johann Heinrich Schmelzer’s violin sonatas, too, are characterised by extraordinary imagination and great expressiveness, with a pronounced sense of contrast and dance-like movement.
Welcome to a chamber music programme brimming with Baroque passion, virtuosity and exuberant vitality.
