Between the late 1980s and the early 1990s, a musical revolution unfolded, spurred by these objects and events, in which the underground scene reinvented guitar music and slowly seeped into the mainstream, whilst politically, conservatism had taken hold in place of utopias and visions of the future.
Reynolds recounts the explosion of noise pop, shoegaze, slackers and grunge – from My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth, who sparked a second wave of psychedelia with their breathtaking sounds, to the Cocteau Twins and Slowdive, who transported listeners into dream worlds.
Also featured are: Dinosaur Jr., Björk, the Pixies, PJ Harvey, Nirvana, Felt, R.E.M., Hüsker Dü, Talulah Gosh, Big Black, the Butthole Surfers, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Galaxie 500, Mercury Rev, Pavement, Stereolab, the Stone Roses, Pussy Galore and many more.
‘Still in a Dream’ is the highly personal account of a journalist who, as a writer for various music magazines at the time, was there to document these musical developments and give them a name.
Simon Reynolds evokes the magic of the analogue world, before the internet, streaming and social media changed the rules of the music game forever. A book for anyone who wonders what has been lost – and what may never have disappeared entirely.
Simon Reynolds was born in London in 1963. He now lives in his adopted home of Los Angeles. In addition to his seminal work on the post-punk era, *Rip It Up And Start Again*, he has co-authored *The Sex Revolts – Gender, Rebellion & Rock’n’Roll* with his wife, Joy Press, amongst other works.
