by Carolin Millner

Their story is far less well known than that of the White Rose or Stauffenberg’s resistance movement: despite everything, a group of young people in Berlin in the 1930s found the courage to stand up to the fascist regime. They distributed leaflets, sabotaged arms factories and helped people escape.

DAS ICH IM WIR tells the story of the Jewish-Communist resistance group centred on Marianne and Herbert Baum, who took action out of political conviction; out of solidarity and the resolve not to stand idly by.

In this coming-of-age spoken theatre piece, you will meet young people who, in a world full of threats, are searching for ways to take action.

What gives people a sense of stability when circumstances overwhelm us? When does a stance become resistance? And how does one hold on to hope when one’s own freedom is at stake? With her collective Eleganz aus Reflex, playwright Carolin Millner enriches collective memory and Berlin’s city history with a narrative of Jewish resistance.

Historical events meet the perspective of a younger generation. Acting, choreography, music, set design, costumes and film/video come together to create a theatrical evening that not only tells the story of the Baum Group, but also allows the audience to experience it physically and directly. A play about resistance and remembrance, and the decision not to look away. And about what people themselves would do when it really matters.
