The Hexenberg Ensemble brings ‘Gevatter Tod’ and ‘Rapunzel’ to the stage with dark humour, biting wit and surprising twists – classic fairy tales intended strictly for adults.

The Grim Reaper

One thing is certain: Death always comes. And he cannot be outwitted. Anyone who tries will find themselves facing it – the end. A fairy tale in which the boundaries between good and evil, life and death, become blurred. What is the essence of what we call life? Love? Deception? And what happens when we stand up to the forces that hold our world together? There is no remedy against death.

Rapunzel

‘Rapunzel, let down your hair…’, words from a fairy tale that are at least as well-known as its authors, who committed them to writing for posterity. Everyone knows this fairy tale: a story of the fulfilment of one’s deepest desires and of first, great and everlasting love. But when we allow this fairy tale to become reality, it begins to take hold of us and suddenly the characters merge with us. All of a sudden, it is the fairy tale that observes the audience and challenges them. Everything is turned upside down and abysses open up that can only find expression in an opulent Baroque opera.
