You think something is about to happen. Change. Intensification. Development. But in reality, nothing happens. So Antigone waits on stage, where she is expected to recite the same old stories of death over and over again. She will die and be buried hundreds more times. And we will dig her up hundreds more times. We repeat the same story over and over again, and yet we remember nothing. Whilst more and more people are dying out there, the stage remains empty of their dead. There is no script for them.

Inspired by the eternal recurrence of Sophocles’ Antigone and under the shadow of the brutal events of escalating conflicts worldwide, a group of young theatre-makers undertakes the paradoxical attempt to keep Antigone alive precisely by finally letting her rot away.

If history has long since become reality – what is the point of repeating it? And if the world itself becomes a theatre of killing – what can theatre still be?

This personal, physical performance about theatre, death, crisis, memory and resistance was created as part of the Hamburg emerging artists’ festival KIEZSTÜRMER.
