A turbulent Christmas story based on Friedrich Wolf’s work
Leopold Löwenhaupt, the father, buys a live goose, which is to be served on Christmas Eve with dumplings, red cabbage and stewed apples. Until then, the goose is to be kept in a box in the potato cellar.
Little Peter looks after the goose and names her Auguste (‘Gustje’). He even insists that Auguste be allowed to sleep in the children’s bedroom, and secretly takes her into bed with him. When, shortly before Christmas, his father wants to send Auguste off to goose heaven, it is not just the goose who raises a hell of a fuss.
