A Musical Comedy Based on a Story by Thomas Brasch and George Stamkoski

In Thomas Brasch’s previously unpublished comedy film script *Alles Glück der Welt* (*All the Happiness in the World*), the East German author, writing in 1985, envisions a future that seems eerily familiar in today’s world. He humorously depicts a German society following the fall of the Berlin Wall, in which the Nazi past has not been come to terms with, but continues to exert its influence.

Although the political division of the country into East and West has officially been overcome, it lives on in people’s bodies and relationships. A new war is looming. People wear gloves. They are afraid of anything that might be contagious. Intimacy becomes an imposition. Freedom now only manifests itself in the form of collective isolation.

So it is 1999 and Berlin lies by the sea. After a spell at a US military boarding school, Robert Küssler, the son of an arms manufacturer, returns to this reality. His unexpected reappearance throws the family order into disarray.

Will he be able to carry on the family business in the traditional manner? The family crisis acts as a magnifying glass for social conditions and offers a glimpse into emancipation within bourgeois structures shaped by economic interests and ideological continuities.

With his songs, written in the spirit of punk, Brasch draws on the musical theatre of the 1920s.

“We infect because we hate: the world must be turned upside down – the rich and the poor classes. The whole lot turned on its head.”

Lena Brasch, born in Berlin in 1993, works as a writer and director. As Thomas Brasch’s niece, she has had first-hand access to his previously unpublished film script and is now re-examining her family history and the subject matter anew. Her work straddles the realms of literature, pop culture and political analysis. Drawing on biographical entanglements and contemporary discourses, she develops a form of theatre that does not reconstruct the past, but rather shifts it into the present as raw material, thereby making the future conceivable as an open possibility, beyond traditional narratives.
