Ivo Dimchev

A temporary community allows itself to be imperfect for one evening: inspired by the music of the ‘Waltz King’, ‘DI/Strauss technique’ unfolds as a communal ritual of joy and irreverence, blending queer humour with operetta kitsch and camp catharsis.

The choreographer, singer-songwriter, performance artist and provocateur Ivo Dimchev has been delighting HAU audiences for many years. In his performances, he skilfully brings together high culture and subculture, pop and Balkan rhythms. Yet he never simply takes to the stage – time and again, he challenges his laid-back audience.

This is also the case in “DI/Strauss technique”: Dimchev transforms the intoxicating potential of Johann Strauss’s music into a humorous, playful group choreography involving the audience. He weaves themes such as self-love, financial worries, sexual self-determination and emotional overload into the dancing, singing crowd, only to react to them artistically himself in a moment of divine absurdity.

“A chorus of frivolity. A love letter to all that is human. Di/Strauss – be yourself, but let’s do it together!”
