Catholic and Protestant connections
Today’s NoonSong features three marvellous works of early music that are rarely heard outside this programme. We will hear one of the 104 surviving Magnificat compositions by the Munich-based grand master of Catholic music, Orlando di Lasso, who perfectly blends Gregorian chant with Renaissance polyphony. The widely-travelled Bohemian nobleman and composer Krystof Harant follows in the same tradition. He later converted to Protestantism and paid for it with his life. Heinrich Schütz, for his part, combined the polyphonic compositional style of the Renaissance with the drama and declamatory style of modern Baroque music in his works.
