Rock, soul, funk and pop meet the trumpet and saxophone: Ax and the Hatchetmen blend a wide variety of influences into a sound that really comes into its own, particularly when performed live. The six musicians from Chicago are among the city’s most exciting young acts – and captivate audiences with a blend of musical precision, enthusiasm and palpable chemistry.

The band was formed in 2018 when singer and guitarist Axel Ellis, guitarist Sal Defilippis, bassist Hunter Olshefke, drummer Chaandmon Crofton, trumpeter Phil Pistone and saxophonist Quinn Dolan got together whilst studying jazz. The musical craft they acquired there still forms the basis of their sound today, though it by no means prevents them from crossing genre boundaries.

Instead, Ax and the Hatchetmen draw freely from a wide musical repertoire: guitars meet a powerful rhythm section, brass meets catchy melodies, and rock meets soul and funk. The result is a sound that is as versatile as it is laid-back, remaining technically accomplished without ever coming across as overly intellectual. Above all, however, it thrives on the special bond between the six musicians – and on an energy that is instantly transmitted to the audience on stage.
