Calm and turmoil, violence and tenderness, drama and light-hearted play: Sergei Prokofiev brilliantly translated Shakespeare’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ into music. Conducted by Catherine Larsen-Maguire, the Berlin State Youth Orchestra will perform excerpts from Prokofiev’s suites, skilfully alternating between driving rhythms, delicate melodies, love, dance and grief.
The concert opens with another masterpiece of Russian modernism: Shostakovich’s ‘Festive Overture’, followed by a world premiere: Eleftherios Veniadis composed his Concerto for Accordion, Voice and Orchestra especially for the Berlin State Youth Orchestra and the soloist Ronja Mirandolina Ramisch.
