Can data, scores and AI help to ensure greater fairness?
What, and in what form, should a society based on solidarity and sustainability reward – and where do surveillance, paternalism and injustice begin?
Algorithms that assess, reward and penalise individual behaviour: whilst this may initially sound like a surveillance state, it could raise the question of whether socially desirable behaviour can be promoted more fairly and flexibly through a social credit system than through penalties and taxes.
Together, in the Open Lab, you will explore the question of what behaviour a society based on solidarity and sustainability should reward, what such incentives might look like, and what data could be used for this purpose. And above all: where are the boundaries – when do incentives become paternalism, assessments become surveillance, and supposed justice give rise to new injustices?
Workshop leader
Mads Pankow writes and speaks on AI and society. He founded the magazine ‘Die Epilog’, organised the Digital Bauhaus Summit and has advised various federal and state ministries. In his book ‘Die wahrscheinliche Wahrheit’ (The Probable Truth), he examines how AI is transforming truth, justice and society.
